Captaining Shrewsbury at Wembley an honour tinged with disappointment, says Mat Sadler

Mat Sadler says leading Shrewsbury out at Wembley will be an 'amazing honour' – but wishes injured skipper Abu Ogogo was wearing the armband.

Club captain Sadler will take over the matchday duties from Ogogo for tomorrow's Checkatrade Trophy final with Lincoln, with Ogogo this week ruled out for the season as he requires knee surgery.

But Sadler insists that, should Paul Hurst's men claim a first-ever victory at the national stadium, both he and Ogogo will lift the trophy.

Thirty-three-year-old Sadler, who will be playing at Wembley for the first time in his career, said: "Regardless of playing or not, me and Abs would be up there if we win.

"In terms of leading the team out, that would be an amazing honour. Would I rather Abs was in the team and leading us out? Yes. He's a good mate of mine, so for personal reasons I'd want that.

"It would be a real honour if it was the case. Tinged with disappointment that it wouldn't be Abs.

"If we win it we'd both be lifting it together."

Ogogo has worn the armband for Hurst's side this season. Ex-Blues defender Sadler insists that not having the armband does change his mentality on the pitch.

Sadler added: "I suppose I know my place in the team anyway. With or without the armband I still feel the same, my position in the team anyway.

"If I was ever to cross the fence on to management then you'd want your captain to lead but also other people in the team to lead to take responsibility as well.

"The gaffer mentioned that the other day with Totes (Nsiala) and Abs not playing. It was up to other people to step up which he thought they did."
