Shrewsbury Town boss Paul Hurst: I was backed 100 per cent in window

Boss Paul Hurst is delighted with the backing he received from Shrewsbury during the January transfer window, insisting it was ‘100 per cent’.

Hurst was backed with transfer fees for three players during the month, while two further additions arrived on loan.

And the manager paid tribute to chairman Roland Wycherley for supporting him in his bid to bolster Town’s high-flying squad in their unlikely promotion tilt.

Hurst has spent transfer fees on eight signings since last summer. He said prior to January how he hoped there would be no restriction and that the Town hierarchy would ‘take a gamble’ in targetting something special this season.

“You never get everything you want – and that’s in terms of players,” said Hurst. “The backing, I was 100 per cent given it. We attempted a couple of things that haven’t come off and that would have been more finance spent on fees and personal terms as well.

“I’m very happy. I think the chairman sees we’re trying to add value to the squad in a couple of permanents.”

Town worked right until the wire on Wednesday’s deadline. The final addition, that of Sam Jones from Grimsby, only came alive at 6pm – and the boss was delighted to see the attitude toward the new additions.

“Between himself, Brian (Caldwell) and Jayne (Bebb), there was a lot of hard work going on, even at the last minute – the chairman and Jayne were there to welcome Sam,” he added.

“That’s great. That shows what type of football club it is, a very close one, and I’m delighted it is that way.

“Now hopefully we’ve given ourselves the best chance of finishing these last 18 games off well.

“There’s still a long way to go but in some ways it’s not that long as well. Just near enough three months and we should all be looking forward to it.

“He wants me to be happy, genuinely, and that he’s supporting me and he certainly did that. We had a little drink and put transfer talk to bed for some time.”
