The 26-year-old's two-and-a-half-year deal from Grimsby was revealed around 20 minutes after the 11pm deadline.

But he became Town's third addition of a hectic deadline day for Hurst and the League One high-fliers.

Jones has shone for he boss's former side Grimsby and netted 13 goals for midfield in his 12 months with the Mariners.

Hurst said on the former non-league man: “I think we’ve got someone that’s hungry and ambitious.

"He’s at decent age, probably a little bit of a later starter, so I think there’s still improvement there and his goal return has been pretty healthy, so he’s a good addition that we are looking forward to working with.

“It was a bit of a rush, but we’ve got it over the line and he’s another good addition to the squad.

“He brings an attacking threat. I think he’s capable of playing in a couple of positions in that attacking area and from midfield, so I’m pleased that we’ve got more options going forward and that’s really what today’s been all about for us.

“I think defensively we’ve been very strong and I was just trying to add some quality and something a bit different to us and Sam’s one of those that can do that."

Jones, who previously played for Alfreton, Heanor Town and Gateshead, brings Town's January player haul to five players including defenders Max Lowe and Luke Hendrie, while attackers Abo Eisa and Nathan Thomas also joined.
