Lifelong Owls fan Hurst has been muted with the bookmakers as a strong candidate to take over from Carlos Carvalhal after the Portuguese's Hillsborough sacking.

Hurst insisted after his side's 0-0 draw at Wigan that there was nothing in the rumours, with Wednesday reportedly hunting for an established name to take charge.

But the 43-year-old made a case for more young, English bosses to get a chance.

"Irrespective of whether it's Wednesday or anyone else, I am bored of hearing that - whether it's myself or any other young English managers - that we don't have experience," he said.

"Managing a football club, managing players, who are ultimately people, it doesn't change dramatically.

"Yes you might have media and certain things that are bigger, on a bigger scale. The one big difference is players earning more money.

"But it's still trying to find something that motivates them.

"I've got a group of players that are absolutely working their socks off to produce and defy the odds and that's something I'm very proud of.

"There's nothing in it as far as I'm concerned."

"Overall I think we can get very bogged down in this management thing of having to have experience. How did anyone get a job in the first place?

"It's genuinely not distracting in the slightest. Flattering? Yes. All it does is shows how well we're all doing in terms of Shrewsbury Town Football Club."

He added: "I've never been a League One manager - at the minute things are going OK for us.

"There's no divine right because you've done something for 10 years. I've been through a hell of a lot as a player and manager in different situations.

"I don't buy into this 'you need experience' - look at Lee Johnson (at Bristol City), how much experience did he have before?"
