Chris Doig delighted by 'professional' Shrewsbury Town

Chris Doig was satisfied with Shrewsbury's professional performance as they made it back-to-back Checkatrade Trophy victories.

A 3-0 victory over a vastly inexperienced West Bromwich Albion under-21 side secured Town qualification from Group E in front of a small crowd at Montgomery Waters Meadow.

Lenell John-Lewis, Carlton Morris and Louis Dodds were on target, as midfielder Bryn Morris returned from two months out injured and Christos Shelis - on the back of his new two-year deal - made his Town debut.

Boss Paul Hurst made 10 changes from the side that beat Scunthorpe in League One last weekend, with a big derby at Walsall on the horizon for the League One table-toppers.

“It was a professional performance," said Hurst's deputy Doig.

“The lads showed a good attitude and worked very hard. It wasn’t an easy game from the fact that they had everyone behind the ball, but I think once the first goal goes in the lads are on the way.”

Joe Riley featured in a more unfamiliar left-back position for Shrewsbury as Junior Brown, who had played every minute previously this season, was awarded a night off.

With on-loan Chesterfield man Zak Jules injured, Riley poses as a good option on the left side of defence with James Bolton excelling at right back.

“He had a lot going forward," added Doig. "He showed a good attitude and a good work ethic and it was nice to get him 90 minutes as well.

"I thought he adapted very well and was comfortable throughout."

Midfielder Morris, who played the first game of the season before knee surgery sidelined him out of Town's extraordinary league form, looked comfortable in his 90 minute display.

"He came through, tired ever so slightly, but the way he started showed the game his quality straight away," added the assistant.

"His switches of play and his passing, the tempo he plays at, the speed he moves the ball and passes the ball, I thought he did very well considering it's his first day back."

Dodds' goal, Town's third, was a classy curled finish from distance into the corner. It was his first goal of the season.

“I was pleased for him to get that goal," said Doig. "He’s one that hasn’t had as many minutes as he would like, but his attitude throughout has been fantastic and he’s a great member to have as part of the squad."
