Paul Hurst: Fans can be loud and proud to support Shrewsbury Town
Paul Hurst wants Shrewsbury Town fans to be loud and proud about supporting the club after their remarkable start to the League One campaign.
Shrewsbury have endured four tough seasons in the third tier over the last five years but have hit new heights under Hurst, who has created a post-war record with an unbeaten run of seven wins from eight.
And the boss has called for Town fans to not be shy about their club’s form ahead of a tasty Montgomery Waters Meadow meeting with former Premier League champions Blackburn on Saturday.
“Credit to the fans, they were very vocal, we had a good number travel,” said Hurst.
“They must be enjoying it and proud to say that they support Shrewsbury Town.
“Maybe they’ve had a couple of seasons of whispering it when someone’s asked, or avoided the question – now I’m sure they’re loud and proud.
“We aim to try and make them proud of the team as much as possible.”
It took Shrewsbury until January 7 last season to amass their current points haul of 22. Town were followed by 602 boisterous away fans in the weekend’s 2-1 win at Oldham.
Hurst was satisfied by his side’s ability to carve the Latics open and show a sturdy resilience to defend when the hosts peppered Town with shots and crosses during the second period.
Shrewsbury have won by just one goal in all seven of their league victories so far this season.
“There’ll be days when it doesn’t go for us but there was fight again at Oldham with good play at times,” added the Town chief.
“It’s great for the fans who can be proud to wear the shirt or proud to say they’ve been to Oldham or to our stadium to watch the team.”
