Paul Hurst faces Shrewsbury keeper dilemma
Boss Paul Hurst admits he has a ‘difficult decision’ over who to pick in goal for Shrewsbury this weekend.
High-flying Town host Wigan Athletic with Dean Henderson back after joining up with England Under-21s.
The Manchester United loanee won the nod to start the first four games after impressing in pre-season.
But Craig MacGillivray has filled in well for the last two matches, leaving the Montgomery Waters Meadow boss with plenty to ponder for what will be the club’s 3,000th match in the Football League.
“It’s a difficult one,” admitted Hurst. “Dean has done extremely well but Craig has certainly not done himself any harm and has been involved in two victories.
“I’m sure he’ll be disappointed not to have the clean sheet at Gillingham. There was certainly nothing he could do with it as it went off the post.
“But he made some good saves in the first half and kicked it well.
“It’s not easy, it was a different back four for him than Tuesday (against Coventry).”
MacGillivray joined during the summer from Walsall, where he played second fiddle to Neil Etheridge last season.
And Hurst admitted it had been a tough call over who to put between the sticks on the opening day against Northampton.
“He’s had to be patient and come in and do his job - that’s what he’d done in pre-season really,” added the boss.
“There wasn’t an easy decision there. I just think Deano had done that well we gave him the opportunity and he’s done well.
“But it’s pleasing we can make that change and I’m not panicking going into the game thinking ‘oh I’ve got to put him in goal’ – that’s far from the case.
“Craig can be happy with the results and his performances.”
The Town players were back in training yesterday after being given Monday off.
“It was a bit of a reward plus we were back late (from Gillingham), I felt it was the best thing to do,” added Hurst.
