Shrewsbury Town miss out on Connor Goldson cash bonus

Shrewsbury Town have missed out on a cash bonus as Connor Goldson's Brighton reached the Premier League – due to the defender not playing enough games.

The 24-year-old former Greenhous Meadow favourite underwent preventative heart surgery in February after a routine cardiac screening revealed a 'possible risk factor'.

For Shrews to receive a promotion bonus on the sale, Goldson was required to play half of his side's games.

The surgery ruled the Wolverhampton-born defender out for the remainder of the campaign, while Chris Hughton's Seagulls clinched promotion to the Premier League on Easter Monday.

"Unfortunately for us, with the way Connor's deal was worded, was that he had to play a certain number of games in the season of their promotion," said chief executive Brian Caldwell on Goldson, who featured 10 times before the surgery, also signing a new deal.

"With his own personal medical situation he hasn't achieved the games.

"The most important thing is to wish Connor all the best and hopefully he makes a full and speedy recovery and gets back playing. Hopefully we'll see him back playing in the Premier League.

"We're delighted for Brighton but obviously from our own selfish point of view we're slightly disappointed we'll miss out on that clause."
