Larry Chambers bemused about Connor McCarthy's Telford form
AFC Telford United assistant boss Larry Chambers cannot put his finger on Connor McCarthy's slump in form this season – but hopes the forward is reinvigorated after a productive spell out on loan.
The 21-year-old forward returned to the Bucks this week following a one-month stint at Warrington Town.
McCarthy was the stand-out player while on loan from Southport as the Bucks managed to pull off a great escape last campaign, scoring seven goals including a double in a crucial 5-5 draw at Stalybridge Celtic, and a winner in a 3-2 triumph at Alfreton Town.
He did not start this campaign at the New Bucks Head but returned in September, to the delight of supporters, as a permanent deal was tied up with the National League outfit.
It has not quite turned out the way either the player or the club would have liked, though, as he has managed just two goals from 13 league appearances this season.
When asked if he could pinpoint why it has not gone to plan for McCarthy, Chambers said: "I haven't got a clue what it is.
"Whether it's confidence, the lack of goals – he has not been the same player as he was last season.
"By his own admission, he is disappointed with his performances and the amount of goals he has scored for us.
In the division below National League North side Telford – the Evo-Stik Northern Premier – he played four games for the Yellows, getting some much-needed game time.
McCarthy marked his return in a Bucks shirt in style on Tuesday, netting late on as they beat Shrewsbury Town 2-0 in the Shropshire Senior Cup final at the Greenhous Meadow, and was due to be involved as they hosted Bradford Park Avenue today.
"He's gone away on loan and got some games. Let's hope the performances he has put in at Warrington will have boosted his confidence," added Chambers."
Meanwhile, Bucks centre-back Dan Preston has extended his loan to Evo-Stik Premier Division Stourbridge until the end of the season.
