Paul Hurst: Antoni Sarcevic's Shrewsbury Town exit was the right decision

Boss Paul Hurst believes Antoni Sarcevic's departure from Shrewsbury Town was in the best interests of both player and club.

Sarcevic left Town by mutual consent last week, just six months after signing a two-year deal at Greenhous Meadow.

The 24-year-old midfielder had been a peripheral figure over recent weeks, making just two appearances since Hurst replaced Micky Mellon as manager in October. Hurst believes the former Fleetwood Town man had struggled to settle since his move last summer.

"I think it would be fair to say that Antoni, even before I arrived, had found it difficult to settle at the club," said Hurst.

"We had a chat and I think it was in the best interests of both parties to come to an agreement.

"I have to say, in fairness to Antoni, he was honest and did not feel he could give his best.

"He was very, very sensible in terms of leaving because he had a long time left on his contract. I can assure everyone he has been very sensible about it.

"That showed to me a genuine side to him as a player and a person. He was clearly unhappy and it wasn't working out. We wish him the best moving forward.

"For ourselves we are one light in the squad but it does free up room for me to strengthen as well."

Hurst is eager to bring in reinforcements during the January transfer window to aid Town in their battle against the drop in League One.

"There will be some room for movement," he said. "It is about bringing people in to try and help the players who are here to give us the best chance possible of staying in this division."
