The rejuvenated AJ Leitch-Smith struck twice and strike partner Ivan Toney was also on target as Town came out on top in front of a sparse crowd at the Riverside Stadium last night.

Hurst was also pleased to see Olly Lancashire and Ethan Jones, just back from a loan spell at Tranmere, in action for the first time since he took over at the Greenhous Meadow while fit-again Shaun Whalley also got important minutes under his belt.

Having seen Town draw 1-1 at Southend in his opening League One game as Shrewsbury manager, Hurst has now enjoyed successive 3-0 victories with the Boro triumph following Saturday's FA Cup success over Barnet.

Hurst said: "It's pleasing to win any game and I've said to the players about trying to get into habits and winning's a great habit to have.

"Some lads got minutes that I haven't seen like Olly. Shaun came on Saturday but got 77 minutes here, and Ethan coming on as well, so it's a pretty good night for us."

Hurst was also pleased to see his front two share the three goals.

He said: "Tones hit the bar, could have had another one. I think AJ's looked lively."
