Louis Dodds: No shirking our Shrewsbury responsibility

Shrewsbury Town midfielder Louis Dodds says there is no hiding place on the training ground as new boss Paul Hurst's regime kicks into gear.

Salop put in a resilient display at Southend on Saturday to secure a point as Hurst oversaw his first game as Shrewsbury boss.

Town were applauded off by supporters in Essex after digging in to claim a share of the spoils, and Dodds insists the new work ethic stems straight from the training ground.

"I think he (Hurst) is a no-nonsense guy and you know what you're going to get from him," said Dodds.

"If you're not doing what he wants then he'll tell you.

"It's a lot of hard work in training but I think that's what we needed and we look sharper for it and fitter. The longer we are training with him, the better we'll get and we'll see out games and get more chances.

"With no disrespect to the previous regime, it's the way the new gaffer sets up. They're short and sharp with high-intensity bursts.

"We wear heart-rate monitors and tracking systems so there's no hiding it. He'll pull you up and tell you to be doing more. You could see, we've only had a week but the lads feel stronger. The longer we keep training hard, we can start sneaking up that table."

Dodds scored his fair share of spectacular strikes during an eight-year stint with former side Port Vale – where he netted more than 50 league goals.

The 30-year-old midfield schemer could be seen hands-on-head after captain Adam El-Abd fired Salop into a 30-yard lead at Southend on Saturday.

Smiling, Dodds admitted the experienced skipper has attempted his share of screamers on the training ground, but most have resulted in in the loss

of balls.

The Town No.10 added: "He has had shots in training and they've all been awful, but fair play to him – he's put one in the absolute bin bag.

"If you watch the highlights I think the first reaction is to put our hands on our heads and then go and celebrate with him!

"I think from now on I'll be spending time with Adam!"
