Hurst is known to prefer a 4-4-2 formation, but is understood to be unable to play his favoured system against Southend due to player injuries and suspensions.

Centre-half Ryan McGivern is suspended for the Roots Hall clash, while fellow defenders Olly Lancashire and Adam El-Abd are both injury concerns.

Following Southend, Shrewsbury face Barnet in the first round of the FA Cup.
