Micky Mellon eager to see Shrewsbury Town come out firing
Shrewsbury town boss Micky Mellon is desperate for Salop to emerge from the traps quicker and improve on their sleepy League One starts.
For the seventh consecutive game in all competitions, Town conceded the first goal in a match when they fell behind against Swindon on Saturday.
After re-iterating his side were desperate to not concede from another set-play, Salop's rearguard was breached from open play just nine minutes in at the Greenhous Meadow, when Swindon midfielder Johnny Goddard rose highest unchallenged to head in.
Mellon is concerned about the issue and admits it needs addressing.
"The disappointing things is that we're losing that first goal again," said a frustrated Mellon.
"Defending it poorly again. We've worked and worked and worked on it – but you've just got to keep it working on it.
"I think everybody here could point out where we should do better. We know, but you've got to keep going and keep practising and practising and showing them and eventually they'll get it right.
"We need to take the lead and have a plan to build rather than just keep chasing things like we're having to do.
"It's been made difficult for us by the types of goals that we're giving away, but we're working hard on it. We're frustrated about it, but we're keen to make sure we keep trying to do things right.
"We know 75 per cent of first goals wins the game, you make it very difficult for yourself and we're very disappointed with the defending for the goal."
Mellon addressed his squad's latest injury woes ahead of an untimely Checkatrade Trophy trip to Scunthorpe United tomorrow evening.
Joe Riley and Antoni Sarcevic both stood down from the starting XI against Swindon – although the latter played a few minutes of added time after Gary Deegan's dismissal.
Deegan will be suspended for the weekend's League One trip to unbeaten Bradford City, while doubts linger over Louis Dodds, who departed on Saturday with hamstring trouble.
