Jack Grimmer backs AJ Leitch-Smith to get on Shrewsbury Town scoresheet

Shrewsbury town flier Jack Grimmer has backed team-mate AJ Leitch-Smith to hit the goalscoring trail after his agonizing near miss against Swindon.

Former Port Vale hitman Leitch-Smith has just one Shrewsbury goal to his name since his summer arrival – a deflected strike in the opening week of the campaign in the EFL Cup against Huddersfield.

He has featured seven times since, most of them after recovering from a hamstring injury, but struggled to capture the form in front of goal he displayed at Vale Park last term.

The 26-year-old came closest yet to breaking his Salop League One duck but could not convert from three yards after being expertly picked out by Grimmer.

And on-loan Fulham man Grimmer said: "He's had the determination to throw himself at it even with the defender next to him.

"I'm sure once he gets one then they'll flow because he's a quality player. In training he's sharp and he scores, it's not like he can't hit a barn door! So it'll come.

"Strikers thrive off confidence, 'Tones' (Ivan Toney) has got that at the minute, he creates a chance out of nothing, he looks sharp and I'm pretty sure that all of our strikers can do the same.

"We need to finish chances, we've not been getting enough of them to miss chances. It's different if you're getting four or five per game, but especially against Swindon, we only had a couple and you need to put them away."
