Micky Mellon: Back the Shrewsbury players

Shrewsbury Town chief Micky Mellon has pleaded with supporters to back the players after boos marked last night's draw with Peterborough.

Salop pegged the visiting Posh back through Ian Black after finding themselves a goal down at the break but missed a penalty on the hour and could not take advantage of their 10-man opposition..

Boos greeted Mellon's charges at half-time, before further jeers followed as the lively Shaun Whalley was hauled off with 20 minutes to play.

The boss defended his call, revealing that Whalley had suffered a recurrence of his calf injury before noting that the boos could affect confidence.

"Some of the stuff that is getting said is just adding a wee bit, it 'could' affect the players," said Mellon.

"I don't mind criticism coming my way, I deal with that and get on with that, but support the boys.

"But get right behind the boys, they're giving you everything they've got, they battled back again for a goal down - yes they're disappointed that it's from a set play again."

Shrewsbury failed to win on home turf and their disappointing Greenhous Meadow form now reads six wins from 28 since the beginning of last season.

With 10 games now played in League One this season, Salop sit 22nd and a point from safety.

A consecutive 1-1 draw offers encouragement in going two unbeaten, but Shrewsbury failed to build on what could have been a big chance to steal three points in the second period.

"We're thoroughly disappointed but there's nobody more disappointed than the players," a beleaguered boss added.

"The detail is that Shaun comes off the wall and his man heads it in.

"I thought they played very well and knocked it around well, the crowd appreciated them at that stage.

"Unfortunately we lost a goal from a set play but we kept going and battling."
