Make me the scapegoat insists Shrewsbury Town boss Micky Mellon
Battling Shrewsbury Town chief Micky Mellon has challenged supporters to make him the scapegoat rather than putting his players under scrutiny.
The Salop chief defended his first-team squad with them lying 22nd in League One after an underwhelming start to the campaign.
Mellon insisted that he takes responsibility for performances on the pitch and setting his players up to compete with other sides in the third tier.
"I accept all of the responsibility for it and I try and make sure we work on all factors of the game to try and minimize the mistakes we will make," said the Shrewsbury boss.
"We perform every day, good practice in training to high standards at both ends of the pitch. I take responsibility wholly for that, all of the time, so the players can concentrate on playing.
"Of course, people look for scapegoats all of the time. And I would rather the scapegoat be me than the players.
"Because I'd rather the players went on to the pitch only concerned about their individual jobs for the team and carrying it out the best way they can and not carrying any baggage from before.
"If we sat down with anybody that doesn't believe that then we'd show them that, maybe we didn't practise it that way, that we wanted to do it another way.
"Players are human beings and not robots and people make mistakes."
