Shrewsbury Town boss Micky Mellon striving to make history

Shrewsbury Town boss Micky Mellon has called on his team to re-write 25 years of history by achieving League One survival this term.

No Salop side has remained in the third tier of English football for three consecutive seasons since the end of the 1991/92 campaign.

And the Town chief aims to right that wrong by keeping Shrewsbury in League One.

Mellon, whose side fell to their fourth home defeat in six games this season on Saturday, revealed at the back end of last season that he had achieved a two-year objective of promoting and keeping the club in the division.

He said: "For myself, as the manager of the club here, the aim should be that – for the first time in nearly 25 years – we want to try and survive back-to-back League One seasons.

"Then the club has to continually build on the team, keep making it improve.

"To where that can get you, I'm not entirely sure, I haven't got a crystal ball, but I know that it's got to continue to improve.

Reversal

"Nearly 25 years is not good enough."

Town dropped to 22nd in the League One standings after eight games following Saturday's home reversal against table-topping Scunthorpe United.

Mellon's charges have won just twice in the league this season, but with exciting youth production and a sound infrastructure – including a new training ground – on the horizon, the boss reiterated his role is to keep supporters entertained.

"At the minute the youth players are really excited about the infrastructure here that's been built, regardless of who's here, it can run now," the Greenhous boss added.

"There's a whole new club been built, we're about to move into a training ground that we've never had before – so all around the place there's improvements.

"My job as the manager is to make sure that people come along on a Saturday and a Tuesday night and I'm fully aware of this.

"I'm very, very conscious that I have to put on a performance for these fans – that they believe is worth paying for, and that's what I'm absolutely committed to try and do.

"We're growing and improving and the one thing not up for debate is that there's a hell of a lot of talent in the dressing room."
