Town could not profit from an encouraging first half hour and were condemned to going behind in the fourth minute of added time at the end of the first period.

Scunthorpe had offered precious little but went ahead when a free-kick from the right was flicked home.

Mellon admitted that his side were not good enough with the ball in the second half when looking for an equaliser.

He said: "I feel the frustration and I feel the pain from all around the ground, because I've been here for a while and I know what they're like and an awful lot of them.

"It's a real painful one and we've lost again from a ball tossed into the box and a flick on, it felt like a sucker punch to be honest, I think we were the better side in the first half.

"I'll be the first to say that wasn't working.

"I wouldn't say that the players under-performed in the first-half, I'd say that they were very, very good first-half, some of the passing was fantastic, we opened them up and probably with a bit more care, we could find ourselves leading, that's the truth.

"The second half they blocked us in which frees up one of our centre-backs, you've got to be better with the ball.

"I accept that and we've got to try and be a threat, I think the subs didn't have the impact I wanted in hindsight, but the intentions were the right ones. Sometimes that happens."

Boos rang around Greenhous meadow at full-time as Salop fell to a fourth home defeat in six, but Mellon insisted he understood and shared the supporters' disappointment.

"The boos weren't loud, that's rubbish, there were some people disappointed with us getting beat," he added.

"I accept that people were disappointed but I felt all in all that the fans were great, they tried to rally us and felt the frustration but never got on top of us.

"It was never anything over the top, it was fans disappointed to lose a home game, I we feel the frustration and I accept the responsibility for losing a game of football, we know why we lost and it's all very frustrating and painful - I feel for them."
