Micky Mellon: Shrewsbury cup success is a mystery

Shrewsbury Town chief Micky Mellon hopes to spoil David Moyes's Salop reunion and continue the club's fine recent cup pedigree.

Mellon's charges head to Sunderland in the second round of the EFL Cup tonight aiming to claim another higher-ranked scalp in a domestic cup contest.

Town have enjoyed wins against Blackburn Rovers, Norwich City, Leicester City and Cardiff City in Mellon's time in charge, while they ran Crystal Palace close last term – losing 4-1 in extra time.

Those wins have helped set up memorable ties against Chelsea and Manchester United and Mellon is craving more of the same as he looks to add another chapter to Salop's love for the domestic cups.

"I don't know what it is about the cup," admitted Mellon. "Certainly over the two years that I've been here, we've done very well in it and got some good results and long may that continue.

"But I couldn't really put my finger on any different preparation or anything we do differently to a league game. So we'll just go and approach it like we normally do and hopefully it falls our way again.

"It's all the mentality things – confidence, focus and belief. There is all that to take into those games."

Former Salop defender Moyes also endured an FA Cup nightmare as his Everton side crashed out to a Nigel Jemson double in the 2002/03 season.

Mellon added: "The Everton match was a fantastic day in the club's history.

"I wasn't here but I'm sure everybody really enjoyed that day and we've always tried to add to that because it's important to see things like Everton and Manchester United and Chelsea and Leicester and Crystal Palace – all of these games – you understand what it means to the club to gain that type of history.

"He'll respect us and know that we'll be going up there to give a good account of ourselves.

"He'll absolutely know that, he's an ex-Shrewsbury player, he's at a Premier League club and he'll want a win under his belt. We'll go up there and try and spoil it for him."
