Micky Mellon pleased with Town versatility

Shrewsbury Town boss Micky Mellon praised his side's adaptability after a half-time change of system earned an encouraging point at Coventry City.

Salop were on the receiving end of a fluent Coventry in the first-half and had to dig in to keep the score goalless - but a change of personnel and formation saw Mellon's charges much improved after the break.

Ian Black and Olly Lancashire were sent on for Town as they shifted from a 4-2-3-1 to a 3-5-2 and were the much better side, with clearer chances.

Ivan Toney, on his first start for the club, cracked the crossbar with 15 minutes to play before Jim O'Brien somehow couldn't connect with what looked like an open goal during seven minutes of added time.

Mellon said: "It was a better performance second-half and full credit to lads and coaching staff to know that's what we're going to do half-time.

"Because like we've said many time that's what we've got to do at Shrewsbury, you've got to be adaptable and change things when you need to, to see it and lads carried it out brilliantly.

"The positives are that we've come to a tough place like Coventry and got a result and a clean sheet.

"In the first-half we came with an idea of how we wanted to play it and it just wasn't working. But what you've got to do if you're Shrewsbury is has another plan and we always had the idea that we'd go with a back three because of pre-season really.

"We had the two tests in pre-season against backs threes, so we knew if that wasn't going to work we were well ready to go to another system and I think the second-half we were miles better and closer and at the end and we're probably a wee bit disappointed we didn't take three points."
