Manager Micky Mellon insists Joe Riley's attacking threat will excite Shrewsbury Town fans.

The 24-year-old became Town's eighth summer signing when he joined on Friday, after signing a two-year deal for an undisclosed fee from Bury.

Riley started his career with Bolton Wanderes, where he appeared in the Premier League.

With 50 league games for Bury and 22 on loan at Oxford United, he has made his name as a right-back who likes to get forward.

Town fans won't need reminding of Riley's ability to join the attack after scoring the Shakers' goal of the season at Gigg Lane in April 2015.

He thundered home a 30-yard drive for a memorable first senior strike in the only goal of the game. Mellon is delighted to have filled a void with the rampaging right-back.

Jack Grimmer has returned to Fulham and Matt Tootle joined Notts County, while Jermaine Grandison has been released.

The Town boss told the club's website: "We're really pleased to get Joe. He's a very attack-minded full-back and I believe the fans will be very pleased with him.

"He's an attacking right-back with bags of energy, he's a good physical size and technically very gifted.

"I think he'll fit in really well with what we want to do next season and he's got great experience of playing at this level.

"He's done very well and, of course, he scored that great goal against us which we won't let him forget about!

"I'm really excited about working with him and he's definitely the type of player I believe we need to be able to move the team forward."

Mellon revealed he had to be patient to get his man, continuing: "In football, it never really happens in the order you want it to happen in.

"You've got to be patient and if you're patient you'll get the one you want.

"As soon as I learned he was going to be available, I was determined we were going to do everything we could to bring him in."

Mellon believes Riley has the right attitude to help improve Town after last season's brush with relegation.

He added: "Joe is desperate to get better and move his career forward and make it a success.

"The more we can bring in with that mentality the better because it can only be good for the football club."
