Shrewsbury Town's first trip to Wembley

Striker Nigel Jemson became a Shrewsbury Town favourite and wrote his name in club folklore with his FA Cup third round brace in the win over Everton.

But his name wasn't too popular around Shropshire on the afternoon of 14 April 1996.

It was 20 years ago that Shrewsbury Town paid their first visit to Wembley for the final of the Auto Windscreens Shield and a clash against Rotherham United.

For both clubs, it was their first time at the national stadium and a chance to step out under the twin towers.

More than 35,000 supporters were there to see the game with just over 16,000 of those backing Fred Davies' side.

In the end it was two goals from Jemson, who was on loan at Rotherham at the time from Oxford United, that proved the difference.

Six years earlier, he had also netted the winner there in the League Cup final for Nottingham Forest.

He struck in either half to put the Millers in control before Mark Taylor netted nine minutes from time to set up a tense finale.

The final few minutes proved a thrilling affair but an equaliser proved out of reach.

Nevertheless, it proved a great day out and gave Shrewsbury a taste of gracing the biggest stage of all after more than 100 years of waiting.

Thankfully it is one they have experienced again since with trips to Wembley for League Two play-off finals – although unfortunately not with better results.
