Shrewsbury Town defender Mickey Demetriou ruled out for rest of season with ligament damage
Shrewsbury Town have suffered a blow after defender Mickey Demetriou was ruled out for the rest of the season.
The 25-year-old left back damaged the lateral ligament in his knee in last week's 3-1 defeat at Millwall - his first game of the campaign after being recalled.
Demetriou, who is out of contract this summer, will undergo surgery.
Assistant manager Mike Jackson said: "Mickey is going to be out for the rest of the season.
"We had the scans back yesterday and he's damaged his lateral meniscus and he's going to need an operation on it.
"It's disappointing for the lad as he's just got back into the side.
"It's been a bit of an up-and-down season for him but you don't wish anything like that on anyone.
"Hopefully he'll recover as quickly as he can."
Demetriou sustained the injury during the game but was able to carry on - even going in goal for Lee Gregory's last-minute penalty after Mark Halstead was sent off.
"I think sometimes that happens with knee injuries - it happened like that with me here - I carried on to the end of the game and it showed up afterwards," said Jackson.
"So it's disappointing for us and the rest of the squad because you don't want to lose any players."
Midfielder Ian Black is fit after coming off at Millwall with a facial injury, but Jermaine Grandison will be fit after missing that game after undergoing an injection and procedure on his troublesome hip.
Manager Micky Mellon missed this afternoon's press briefing to attend the funeral of Tranmere legend Johnny King.
