Mark Halstead keen to stay at Shrewsbury
Mark Halstead wants to stay at Shrewsbury Town – and is keen for fellow goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler to sign a new deal too.
The pair are two of 17 players out of contract this summer and Halstead has kept fit-again Leutwiler on the bench for the last two games.
The 25-year-old, who has made 17 appearances this season, said: "I'd love to stay here, but I'm taking it game by game.
"If Shrewsbury want me to stay, I'm sure we'll talk but until that happens I'm just concentrating on the games.
"I'm very happy here; I'm settled in the area, it's a good club and I think it's got potential to be a lot higher up than we are.
"I enjoy being here and I'd like to be here in the future, but who knows what's going to happen?
"Once we've secured our safety we'll talk, so I'm not going to think about it until we're safe."
Discussions have already started with Leutwiler and Halstead wants to continue their friendly rivalry.
He said: "I'd love him to stay – I think he's been unbelievable for the club. The record he had last season and the way he played was second to none.
"If we both stay, then great – but if not, that's football."
Halstead made just two appearances last season, but insists he has never seen himself as an understudy.
He said: "I've never seen myself as a No.2 – if you ever think that, what's the point in playing? I know there are goalkeepers out there happy to sit on the bench, but I'm not one of them.
"I've been desperate to play for a long time and people know that. Now I'm playing, I don't want to be out of the team.
"Competition is healthy and the club is lucky to have a good pool of goalkeepers.
"Jayson and myself are first-team keepers but we can't forget Callum Burton and Shaun Rowley. They push us every day."
