The 20-year-old has arrived on loan for the rest of the season from Town's League One rivals Wigan Athletic.

And the deal marks the culmination of long-standing interest in the player from Shrews boss Micky Mellon.

Former Partick Thistle player Hendry said: "I knew about the interest from Shrewsbury for a little.

"I spoke to my gaffer Gary Caldwell, who told me there had been a bit of interest now and again. Then I got the phone call from my gaffer who said there had been an enquiry about me.

"Then Micky gave me a call and that was it – when I spoke to him I knew I wanted to come here and get some games under my belt at Shrewsbury.

"He said that he has watched me develop at Partick Thistle. He watched me a couple of times against Celtic.

"Then once I got the move in the summer to Wigan, he said he still kept tabs on me.

"I think he is a manager that knows the type of player I am and knows the best he can get out of me. So, yes, I am really excited to work under him."

Hendry is keen to continue his learning process as a footballer and reckons the Greenhous Meadow is the right place to do just that.

He said: "I want to enjoy myself, learn things from the football club, from the manager and get games under my belt before the season ends.

"I think that will put me in good stead going into the next season, but I have come here to work hard and see where it takes me."

On his personal playing style, Hendry said: "I am a centre-half, so I see myself as a modern day centre-half.

"I like to play from the back, but also with that I am aggressive first and foremost to defend.

"I like to win my battles and be on top in games. And I like to keep clean sheets – that is what I thrive off.

"But as well as that I like to see me as a good footballer as well."
