Micky Mellon: There will be no Town let up

Manager Micky Mellon insists Shrewsbury Town will not be allowed to take their foot off the gas despite taking another step towards safety.

Town are now eight points clear of the drop zone with nine games left after Saturday's 2-2 draw at Bury.

There were defeats for five of the seven teams below them, with only Blackpool's 2-1 win at Crewe bettering their result.

Every team Shrewsbury play from now until the end of the season is above them, including five of the current top seven.

But they are now eight games unbeaten in the league – their joint longest since April 2012, their League Two promotion season.

And Mellon reckons they have to keep performing at their maximum to achieve safety.

The Town boss said: "It's important we have that gap, but it means nothing to me other than moving on to the next game and trying to win it.

"I'll continually be like that and the players won't be allowed to take their foot off the gas."

Mellon hailed Sullay Kaikai after first brace twice put Town ahead to make it four goals in four games and nine in 18 for the season.

The Town chief added: "He's incredible – both finishes were terrific. It was just a pity he couldn't get that hat-trick, but that would be me being greedy.

"It was brilliant to see that kind of football being played – that's what people come to see. He practises very hard to do that – it's not as if he just woke up one day and did that."

Mellon also praised the first-half performance as one of their best, after they switched from 4-3-3 to 4-4-2 and extended their unbeaten away run to seven games and one defeat in 12 on the road.

He said: "We changed the shape and we'll continually do that. I thought in the first-half we were excellent – as good as what we've been on the road for a long time.

"Our passing was really good and we always looked a real threat and pacy. We looked a very decent side."

Jermaine Grandison pulled out of contention on Saturday morning with a recurrence of his hip problem.
