Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro's cross seemed to sail past keeper Luke Daniels without anyone else touching it.

But it was fellow substitute Andy Mangan who claimed it with seconds left, five minutes into time added on.

Earlier Sullay Kaikai gave Micky Mellon's side a deserved 21st-minute lead.

It came in a half where Kyle Vassell missed a golden chance, Abu Ogogo went desperately close and Nathaniel Knight-Percival had a header cleared off the line.

But a mistake by Kaikai allowed sub Kyle Wootton to equalise on 69, before an awful backpass from Mat Sadler allowed Paddy Madden to grab his 19th goal of the season nine minutes later.

Town made two changes to the side that beat Coventry 2-1 on Tuesday, as Sadler and Jordan Clark replaced the injured Junior Brown and the suspended Ian Black at left back and central midfield respectively.

Black was booked for the 10th time this season in midweek but apparently the club didn't receive notice of his suspension until yesterday at 4.30pm.

Shrewsbury Town (4-3-3): Halstead; Grimmer, Knight-Percival, Smith, Sadler; Ogogo, Cole, Clark; Whalley (Akpa Akpro 71), Vassell, Kaikai (Mangan 76).

Subs not used: Grandison, Wellens, Vernon, Grandin, Burton (gk).

Scunthorpe (4-4-2): Daniels; Clarke, Mirfin, Wallace, Townsend; Ness, Bishop, King (Williams 62), O'Brien; Hopper (Wootton 56), Madden.

Subs not used: Laird, McAllister, Goode, McSheffrey, Anyon (gk).

Referee: Trevor Kettle (Berkshire).

The game got off to a slow start on a dry, mild day at the Greenhous Meadow but it was that man Kaikai who brought it to life.

The on-loan Crystal Palace winger cut inside from the left in the ninth minute and let fly for a bouncing shot that was deflected behind for a corner.

Neal Bishop headed Shaun Whalley's flag kick away for another one and this time Daniels collected Vassell's hooked pass back into the danger area.

Vassell was the guilty party in the 11th minute when he wasted a glorious chance to put Salop in front.

Daniels's clearance hit David Mirfin on the back and Vassell was left in the clear, only for his chip to clear the back-pedalling keeper and the bar by a comfortable distance.

Town had to defend a minute later when top scorer Madden was put clean through, but goalkeeper Mark Halstead was quickly off his line and blocked the shot with his legs.

Jack Grimmer obliged the crowd's shouts to shoot when he let fly on 14 after Bishop's clearance from Jordan Clark's cross, but his drive sailed well wide.

Halstead again had to be alert however after a quarter of an hour when he dived smartly to his right to push wide Madden's shot after a flick on from Jack King, with Jim O'Brien unable to get on the rebound.

Town returned to the attack and Ogogo's drive took a wicked deflection and wrong-footed Daniels only to go just the wrong side of the post when some fans thought it was in.

But home fans didn't have long to wait to see Shrewsbury take the lead as Kaikai rifled home first time into the roof of the net, after Daniels dropped Whalley's inswinging corner.

It was Kaikai's seventh goal of the season and made him the club's outright top league scorer despite this being only his 17th game in League One.

Little else happened until a huge miss from Madden volleying wide in the 31st minute after Murray Wallace's cross was flicked into his path.

Town had what appeared to be a legitimate penalty appeal turned down in the 37th minute when Sadler's cross hits King's foot then bounced up and appeared to hit his hand, but the referee waved play on.

A minute later there was a big chance for Town as Knight's Percival's header from Whalley's corner was nodded off the line by Conor Townsend.

From Whalley's next corner, Knight-Percival climbed highest again, this time from further out, but Daniels holds his looping header.

There was another half chance for Scunthorpe four minutes from the break when centre back David Mirfin took advantage of Sadler's slip to head Jamie Ness' free kick goalwards but it flew well wide.

Town were decent value for their half-time lead, and if anyone thought they would let up, they were mistaken as they started the second half on the front foot.

Scunthorpe right-back Jordan Clarke was booked for dragging down Kaikai after he turned the right-back.

Town were looking for a way through but they couldn't get enough room for a shot around the edge of the box.

The game took on a scrappy phase as Madden was booked - seemingly very harshly - for charging down Halstead at a goal kick.

Two Scunthorpe substitutes, Wootton for Tom Hopper on 56 then Luke Williams for Jack King, appeared.

In between, on 58 minutes, Ogogo was booked for taking Jim O'Brien's legs as burst through midfield the stopped to turn him.

The game was turned on its head by errors for both Scunthorpe goals.

First Wootton fired home after Madden put Williams through for the cross after Kaikai carelessly gave it away on halfway.

Then after Akpa Akpro replaced Whalley on 71 and Mangan came on for Kaikai off five minutes later, the Iron grabbed what looked like the winner.

It stemmed from an awful back-pass from Sadler which allowed Madden to get in beyond Dom Smith, and after Halstead failed to halt him, he drilled into the unguarded net.

But Town somehow dragged an equaliser right at the end when Akpa Akpro's cross evaded the motionless Daniels.

Mangan - who didn't appear to get a touch - ran across him to extend their unbeaten league run to seven matches.
