Unsung hero Abu Ogogo is tipped for club award

Abu Ogogo has been hailed as a player of the year contender for Shrewsbury Town.

The all-action midfielder has had an impressive first season at the Greenhous Meadow after joining from Dagenham and Redbridge on a free transfer last summer.

The consistent Ogogo has played more League games than any other Town player, despite missing four matches with a hamstring injury after the turn of the year.

And team-mate Nathaniel Knight-Percival believes the Arsenal academy graduate is in the frame for the end-of-season award.

"Definitely. 'Abs' would be up there, Junior Brown has been superb for us, so it's hard to say," said the captain.

"You can rely on him all the time to do all those gritty jobs in midfield. It's brilliant to have a player like that.

"He's a huge player for us – you can see the amount of ground he covers every game for us, he's such a robust player.

"You ask anyone, you want someone like him in your team because he gets around the pitch, gets tackles in, tracks back and gets forward.

"He's just that presence in midfield that you want in a player and he's been superb the whole season."

Ogogo reminds Knight-Percival of James Wesolowski, who is due to return to contention soon. "He's a bit like 'Weso'," he added. "So with 'Weso' being injured, having someone like him is superb."

Assistant boss Mike Jackson feels Ogogo is an unsung hero. "He's a strong character and a strong personality. He's not a shouter and a bawler, but he just gets on with his work," he said.

"He carries injuries, he's bashed and bruised but he just churns things out and goes again. You can rely on him to work. That's a great thing to have.

"It probably goes a bit unnoticed, but not to us. He churns performances out and does the ugly side of it – tackling and winning headers.

"He's not as silky on the eye as some but he's great to have, a good character, very strong."
