Jack Grimmer backs Town to bounce back
Defender Jack Grimmer has urged Shrewsbury Town to take out their Manchester United "hurt" on Colchester – as boss Micky Mellon insisted they weren't negative.
On-loan Fulham right-back Grimmer insisted Town set up to play the same way as usual.
But they were prevented by United pushing left-back Cameron Borthwick-Jackson on, which forced Shaun Whalley back in Monday's 3-0 defeat.
Grimmer said: "The cup run was nice but we came to earth with a bang and I can't wait to play against Colchester tomorrow.
"Regardless of it being Man United, I'm still hurt at how the match went, so there's a real determination to put things right.
"I think the fans thought we played too defensively but if you know the way the gaffer likes us to play, we've been attack-minded. So that was our intention.
"United pushed their left-back on and that made Shaun Whalley play so deep he was in line with me."
Mellon is irritated at suggestions he set up negatively, saying: "We never played any differently to how we did against Fleetwood and Blackpool – it was the same formation and the same personnel.
"We tried to get the same outcome. But United mould around you and pin you back by firing their full-backs forward. Someone has to come back, otherwise a Premier League full-back is standing free in our third of the pitch.
"There's no way anyone with an an ounce of brains about football would allow that to happen. We're talking about £189million worth of talent, my boys worked their socks off and couldn't give any more.
"Could we have been more aggressive with the pressing? Maybe. But we're talking about Juan Mata.
"They did pretty much the same against Stoke, Chelsea and Sunderland – brilliant at ball retention but didn't score the goals."
Mellon also insisted Mata's free-kick for the second goal should have been flagged offside, after three United players formed a wall goal-side of Town's.
He said: "They were offside then they ran across the goalkeeper's eye-line so they completely blocked his view."
