Injured Leutwiler to don mask for Town

Shrewsbury Town goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler could be set for surgery on his face and he will wear a Petr Cech-style mask when he returns to playing.

Leutwiler broke his nose and has had stitches around his eyes, nose and lip after a horror head-against-knee collision.

It came with Grimsby left back Conor Townsend just before half-time of the 0-0 draw in the FA Cup second round last night.

Town's head physio Chris Skitt said: "We'll reassess Jayson today in terms of how his concussion is coming along.

"He'll probably have to see a consultant in regards to his nose and whether he needs an operation.

"I'd imagine he'll be missing for a week or so and when he does come back you'll see him wearing a mask to protect his nose for a while.

"He's got three quite decent sized cuts across his face and he's made a good job of breaking his nose.

"The biggest issue at the moment is concussion, as he was a little bit away with the fairies last night and when we got back.

"I must thank Richard Higgs (sports therapist) as he stayed with Jayson overnight to make sure he was OK.

"It was one of those brave goalkeeping decisions that ends with face against knee and that doesn't normally end up well for the face."

Skitt is just relieved Leutwiler didn't suffer any more damage than he did and made a thorough check of the shot-stopper.

He said: "There was quite a severe clash and Jayson was a little bit 'woozy' after the game.

"When I got on the pitch I checked his spine was alright and there was no sign he'd damaged any nerves so that was encouraging."

There are strict guidelines in place for players who have suffered concussion and Leutwiler is definitely ruled out of Saturday's trip to Peterborough.

Skitt said: "We've got very strict pathways for concussion and the FA have released a whole new concussion guideline this week.

"We'll be well versed in following that protocol and then get him assessed by the consultant."

But Town had no complaints about the challenge, which initially had Grimsby fans howling for a penalty.

Skitt said: "We had a good look at it afterwards and there was no malice - the lad looked quite shook up when Jayson was getting carried off."
