A goal from James Caton and a spectacular free-kick from a unnamed trialist secured the comeback win, after the Shrews found themselves a goal down to a Levi Rowley strike.

Caton as well as Josh Ginnelly were the only players involved with first-team experience, with boss Micky Mellon reluctant to risk players with a lengthy injury list to contend with.

Caton, who has recently returned from a loan spell at Southport, started up front and was one of the star performers along with fellow forward Kaiman Anderson.

The Saddlers started on the front foot and took the lead on 14 minutes.

Jamie Smith chipped the ball over the defence to an on-rushing Rowley, who calmly slotted past name-sake Shaun Rowley in the Shrewsbury goal.

But Town pulled level when striker Caton collected the ball on the edge of the Walsall box and hit a dipping shot into the bottom corner from 20 yards.

Chances then came and went for before Shrewsbury's trialist, who the club wish to remain unnamed, grabbed a dramatic 89th-minute winner.

The central midfielder hit a sweet free-kick from the edge of the box which dipped into the top corner.
