Dean Saunders keen on Shrewsbury Town hotseat
Shrewsbury Town will step up their hunt for Graham Turner's successor next week with former Wolves and Wrexham boss Dean Saunders emerging today as a possible contender.
The former Wales international has joined fellow ex-Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler on the list of potential candidates for the Greenhous Meadow hotseat vacated by Turner on Tuesday.
Both men are understood to be keen to speak to Town officials about the job with the club hoping to make progress next week.
The Shrews have placed coach Mike Jackson in charge for three games – starting with today's trip to Swindon – and hope to have Turner's long-term successor in place to take charge afterwards.
Saunders is understood to be refreshed after the disappointing end to his Molineux reign in May and ready to return to management, with the ex-Aston Villa forward keen to speak with clubs including Town.
The 49-year-old endured an unhappy stint in charge of Wolves, overseeing their second successive relegation, but enjoyed success as a manager at both Wrexham and Doncaster.
Meanwhile, Fowler is ready to launch a managerial career in England after briefly taking charge of Thai side Muangthong United.
He is thought to be aware of the vacancy in Shropshire and open to talks about replacing Turner.
The 38-year-old Kop legend has been linked to the job along with Saunders, former West Brom manager Gary Megson, ex-Wolves midfielder Alex Rae and current Burton Albion boss Gary Rowett.
Striker Tom Eaves says, however, that the Shrews players are happy for play for Jackson for as long as the search takes.
"There's no doubt right now that Michael Jackson's the right man for the job," said Eaves.
"All the lads are behind him and we all want to do well together as a team.
"We all want to do well for Michael as well.
"It's just a matter of taking it a day at a time, sticking together through a time like this and remaining positive. We're just all looking forward to the game on Saturday.
"We had a meeting on Thursday morning and we had a good talk about what's going to happen over the course of the next three games.
"We're just going to give it our utmost and not let him down."
