Dave Winfield gets on bike to recover for Shrewsbury Town

Shrewsbury Town defender Dave Winfield has revealed that he got on his bike to make a speedy recovery from a hamstring injury.

Winfield, who was today expected to be in the squad for the visit of Wolves, returned to cycling after a nasty muscle tear in pre-season left him unable to do weight-bearing exercises.

And the 25-year-old centre-back credits that move, as well as the hard work of the Shrewsbury Town physios, for a swift recovery which has seen him make the bench for the last two games as well as completing two run-outs for the reserves this month.

He said: "At first I couldn't do a lot of weight-bearing exercises such as running, hopping, things like that. But the club have got some bikes here, so I started biking in from home because there was no impact on my legs.

"It was just pure resistance which kept my cardio up, which was brilliant.

"Then slowly and surely we started to get out onto the grass and do a bit of plodding and we increased it from there.

"I have always been a keen cyclist and it was nice to be out in the good weather, so I am sure I will keep it up."

Shrewsbury manager Graham Turner is set for another injury boost with striker John Marsden expected to return to full training next week after recovering from a broken foot.

Marsden was laid low by the injury part way through Town's 3-1 League Cup first-round defeat to Championship outfit Bolton Wanderers. But midfielder Paul Parry (hip) is set to miss the next two weeks while winger Jack Gwilliams is set for a knee operation.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa loanee Graham Burke's strike against Oldham in Shrewsbury's 4-1 Johnstone's Paint Trophy defeat has made a shortlist of 10 as the best goal.
