Shrewsbury Town double act reunited at charity drive

Graham Hawkins last night paid tribute to the one of the key figures of inspiration as he continued his fight to raise funds for the Cancer Patient Care Fund.

Hawkins once again twisted the arm of his old Shrewsbury boss, and eventually fellow Wolves manager Graham Turner, to be guest speaker and resume their footballing "double act" at a charity sports dinner at Molineux.

The two were famously together at the old Gay Meadow to lead Town into the second tier 30 years ago before Hawkins was surprisingly snaffled to become the new manager of Wolves.

But Hawkins, who is raising funds for the Royal Shrewsbury and New Cross Hospitals as he continues his battle against low grade Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, made it clear he has never forgotten the courage and toughness of his old gaffer.

Naming Turner as one of the "inspirational" figures from his life, he recalled: "What would be my last game as Graham's assistant was at Leicester when he was player manager but looked like missing the game because of a badly bruised ankle.

"He could just about walk on it but as the day of the game arrived agreed to have an injection to mask the pain.

"It was done on the team coach as we left the hotel for the ground when the doctor produced a needle so big I couldn't even look. But he injected Graham all round his ankle without him even blinking.

"I've never seen anything like it. I asked him before kick off how his ankle was and he said: 'I've no idea, I can't feel it.
