Paul McCone: AFC Telford can recover

Captain Paul McCone is confident AFC Telford United are on the cusp of a recovery despite another disheartening defeat.

A second-half goal at Boston on Saturday dented any hopes of Rob Smith's men turning their season around – but it was not for the lack of effort and chances.

The defender, who followed Smith from Hednesford Town over a month ago, was a key figure in what appeared a solid Bucks rearguard.

And he said: "It's a bit of a sucker-blow but we had plenty of time to get back into the game.

"We had the penalty to get back into the game but when you're at the bottom everything seems to hit you at once. I think it showed that we left everything out there on the pitch.

"There is no way if we keep playing that way that we will keep getting those defeats. I don't know what there is anybody else out there can do."

The centre-half believes it may take a moment of fortune for the Bucks to rally. Connor McCarthy's penalty miss was one of a number of glorious chances spurned in Lincolnshire.

McCone added: "I genuinely don't know what else we can do. We need a nice little own goal to go in or for it to hit off someone. Something to spark it off.

"For me, with 20 minutes to go if we score the penalty I think we go on and win the game.

"We're all deflated. It's hard to keep travelling away on these long journeys and coming home with nothing.

"The worst part is you think to yourself 'we're not playing too bad' but I'd rather not play the greatest and get the three points.

"The team that he put out there is more than good enough to win and it showed – we definitely deserved more than what we came away with on Saturday."
