The 19-year-old midfielder joined yesterday on a one-month loan and will look to make Saturday's squad for the trip to high-flying AFC Fylde in the National League North.

Smith said: "I think we've been poor in midfield and everyone can acknowledge that. Josh is a really really highly-rated player at Oxford and they have high hopes for him.

"He's a very good technical footballer and he can come in and have a good month with us and hopefully help us get a few wins."

The Kassam Stadium academy graduate signed a professional contract in February 2014 and made two starts for the League Two club last season.

He will add competition for places in the middle of midfield, with Jack Rea still struggling with a hand injury.

Smith added: "Michael Appleton (Oxford boss) rates him really highly. It's a chance for him to get some first-team football but I'm delighted to get him.

"They've got some experienced players in that team and that is probably the only reason he's not playing because they're going for it. The fans will see he's a really talented lad."
