More than 40 apply for the AFC Telford job

AFC Telford United today began interviewing contenders for their vacant managerial post as the hunt for Steve Kittrick's successor goes up a gear.

Chairman Ian Dosser revealed the Bucks have received more than 40 applications for the job, since Kittrick was sacked on Sunday.

While the club are yet to draw up a shortlist, they have begun speaking to some candidates.

Former Wrexham boss Kevin Wilkin is believed to be among them, having formally expressed his interest in the role.

The Bucks would like to have the new man in situ before Saturday's trip to Gloucester City.

But, with the new man set to be the club's seventh manager since Andy Sinton was sacked in January 2013, they are also conscious of the need to make an appointment for the long term.

Dosser said: "We have had a lot of applications and that is pleasing. One of the things we have got to combine is speed with making sure we get the right man.

"We have started the process in that sense and we have not drawn a shortlist at this stage."

The Bucks sit bottom of National League North, having taken just one point from their opening five games, scoring only one goal.

Dosser added: "We are not in a good position and whoever we bring in needs to be experienced at this level.

"Several of the applications we have received are from people who have that experience. As always, you are looking for someone who plays good football but also gets results."

Wilkin is a free agent after being sacked by Wrexham in March, following their shock defeat to North Ferriby United in the FA Trophy final.

But the 47-year-old boasts an impressive pedigree in non-league's second tier, having masterminded Nuneaton Town's return to the Conference in 2012.
