Market Drayton Town 0 AFC Telford 1

AFC Telford United were left with two injuries to key players that left boss Steve Kittrick with an unwanted headache five days before the big kick off.

Mike Grogan and Dave Hibbert went off in the first-half to respective knee and ankle problems, as the Bucks completed their pre-season preparations before Saturday's National League North opener at Lowestoft.

Midfielder Grogan lasted just 18 minutes before suffering a knee injury overstretching for a ball, while Hibbert 'rolled' his ankle as a defender slid into him eight minutes before the break.

Telford controlled the first half, despite the disruption of two injuries.

Unmarked Grogan had the first chance in the seventh minute but headed wide from Jack Roberts's left-wing cross.

Midfielder Sean Clancy, playing left back, was denied in the 12th minute with a shot that appeared to be heading towards the top corner, before goalkeeper Ashley Rawlings pulled off a superb save to tip it over.

Rawlings was in action again on 20 when he smothered Hibbert's header on the line from Clancy's corner. Five minutes later, Ben Harrison headed over another Reid corner.

Telford (4-4-2): Montgomery; Lees, Deaman, Harrison (Green 84), Clancy (Brownhill 71); Reid, Rea, Grogan (A Fletcher 18), Roberts (Anderson 71); Glover, Hibbert (Goddard 40).

But, just as Telford looked set to take the lead, Drayton hit them on the break when striker Scott Ryan got away from the defence only to drag his shot wide from a tight angle.

Normal service was soon resumed, however, when a fine crossfield ball from Clancy sent right winger Izak Reid galloping clear.

The former Macclesfield Town wide man got away from Mike O'Reilly, but could only fire wide with Rawlings to beat.

But the visitors got the goal they deserved on 37 through their summer signing from Shrewsbury Town, midfielder Alex Fletcher, who replaced Grogan.

He burst through the middle before finding the bottom corner with a neat left foot finish. Drayton came into the game more after the break, but it was Telford who were the bigger threat.

Jordan Goddard's point-black volley was brilliantly blocked by Rawlings, after two Drayton defenders went for Clancy's free kick and the loose ball dropped kindly.

There were few more chances of note as a competitive game became scrappy on the hard pitch, but sub Kyle Brownhill forced Rawlings into a smart tip-over with a curling free kick from 25 yards on 79.

Drayton's Mike O'Reilly whistled a first-time drive wide with the last kick of the game but Telford were worth their win.
