AFC Telford's new recruits will have steel

AFC Telford will be targeting players with 'mental toughness' over the summer as they look to bounce back from this season's relegation.

The Bucks suffered their second relegation from the non-league's top tier in three seasons last Saturday.

Managing director Lee Carter named poor recruitment as one of the major causes behind a hugely disappointing campaign.

And he said: "We will admit that we recruited some players that perhaps weren't equipped to deal with not only the physical challenge of the Conference Premier but the mental challenge as well, and the mental challenge of playing for this club when times are tough.

"It is a great when the going is good but it is tough when it is not, and you have got to be mentally capable of dealing with that.

"We have got to make sure going forward that we actually get a group of players who are mentally capable and have got the spirit to deal with those kind of things."

The club's fan-ownership model has also come under scrutiny during the current campaign, with Carter declaring back in October that the time was right to consider other models.

That will again come under the microscope in the close season although Carter added that hunger for success will be decisive in taking the club forward regardless of the ownership model employed.

He said: "I am sure that ultimately it is down to how much you want it.

"You have got to want it as directors, trustees, supporters and if we all want it at the same time enough we can make a good go of this in whatever model we have got."

There are likely to be several changes at the club during the close season with additions to the back room staff as well as changes to playing personnel.

The club is also working hard to increase revenue and midfielder Sean Clancy has this week taken time out to both thank fans who have renewed their season tickets through the early bird scheme as well as encouraging others to follow.

Clancy manned the phones at the New Bucks Head to talk to supporters on Thursday as well as meeting children on a club-run Easter holiday course.

AFC Telford football coaching officer Luke Shelley took to Twitter to thank him for his efforts.

He tweeted: "Thanks to seanclancy for giving up his time today to meet the children on our holiday course and phone up our supporters."
