Kristian Platt can be AFC Telford's anchor man, says Liam Watson

AFC Telford boss Liam Watson believes Kristian Platt can make the midfield holding role his own this season.

The former Stalybridge Celtic man was one of several summer signings following Telford's promotion and began the campaign playing more often as a right-back.

But he has excelled in a deeper-lying midfield role in recent games and was singled out for praise by Watson in the aftermath of Telford's 3-1 win at Woking on Saturday.

And asked if that is where the Bucks chief sees his role in the immediate future, he said: "It is up to him to keep his place.

"I thought he was absolutely outstanding on Saturday and I was pleased with his performance at Lincoln the previous week as well.

"We brought him in as a midfielder, he is not a right-back. He did a good job for us there for a bit but he came in as a midfielder recently and has done well."

Watson believes Platt's defensive qualities provide an ideal counterbalance to those of his other central midfield colleagues.

He said: "Obviously Mike Grogan's first thought is to go forward and Godfrey Poku plays with loads of enthusiasm and the one thing he probably lacks in his game sometimes is discipline in terms of holding his position.

"He does chase the ball but having Kristian playing behind him it actually looked quite compact and solid."

The holding role can be a challenging one but Watson believes Platt has all the attributes to be successful.

He said: "I know that last time Telford were in the Conference, Andy Sinton played Phil Trainer in a holding midfield position. But he isn't a defensive-type player and when we played them we just pushed someone up to him.

"Obviously Kristian is a defender who is decent on the ball so it probably suits him if someone gets pushed on to him."
