Sam Smith has faith in partnership with Mike Phenix at AFC Telford

AFC Telford striker Sam Smith believes he and Mike Phenix can form a deadly partnership following their heroics at Woking.

The former Hereford frontman bagged his first competitive goal for the Bucks and six-goal top-scorer Phenix bagged a brace in the impressive 3-1 win away to the Conference Premier high-flyers.

And the 24-year-old hopes the pair can continue to cause defences major problems together in the coming games.

He said: "It is a cliché that confidence is important to strikers but it does apply to a lot of them and I don't think I am too different.

"It was nice to get that first one out of the way and obviously Mike Phenix has been doing very well up there, scoring a few as well.

"We got a little partnership going on Saturday and hopefully if we can continue that we can get some more good results."

Smith will have increased competition for a starting place upfront this weekend, though, with Tony Gray back in contention ahead of Saturday's trip to Spennymoor Town in the FA Cup fourth qualifying round.

Gray missed the Woking victory because of the birth of his child. He has five goals to his name this season in all competitions.

Whoever gets the nod for the weekend, the Bucks' latest win will have given the bottom-of-the-table team even more belief heading into the coming games.

But Smith said said: "We went to Woking quietly confident. I am sure everyone was writing us off but we know that we can play when we do turn up and start well.

"We did that on Saturday and they were second in the league, but the result proves that doesn't mean anything (on the day).

"If you start well and give a good account of yourselves, you can get results."
