Godfrey Poku urged to continue 'outstanding' efforts at AFC Telford
AFC Telford boss Liam Watson has challenged midfielder Godfrey Poku to keep up his "outstanding" form since bouncing back from red-card controversy.
Poku was sent off twice in his first four matches for the Bucks this season following a summer move from Mansfield Town.
But the 24-year-old has since found his stride. He was one of the team's outstanding performers in Saturday's 3-1 win at Woking, the Bucks' first away triumph of the campaign.
Watson knows all about Poku's potential. He signed him for two loan spells at former club Southport, in 2011 and 2012-13.
The boss said: "The first time I had him on loan at Southport he was outstanding. In his second spell he wasn't quite as good.
"But this year I think he is back to where he was in his first spell at Southport, and the challenge now is to keep that going."
Poku was told to "behave himself" by Watson earlier this season after he was sent off in Telford's 3-3 home draw with the Sandgrounders in August for lashing out at striker Richard Brodie.
That dismissal came three games after he was dismissed, for two bookings, in the season-opening 1-1 draw at Welling.
But Poku has kept his cool since then, despite some rough treatment from the opposition.
Watson said: "There has only been one issue with Godfrey, which was his sending off against Southport.
"His sending off against Welling was an absolute joke and if you look at him, he does get fouled a lot.
"He does really well getting his body between the man and the ball, and there have been so many times that he got brought down for that.
"But that was what he got brought down for against Welling as well, and he got sent off because he fell on the ball (he was deemed to have handled it, earning a second yellow card).
"But that has gone. I have had Godfrey for a good few years and he is not a bad kid, he is not a problem kid, he's just an honest kid.
"He made a mistake against Southport but he hasn't looked back since."
