Steve Akrigg faces long absence for Bucks

AFC Telford United's injured skipper Steve Akrigg is facing six more weeks on the sidelines – but will still assist the Bucks' Conference Premier survival battle.

Manager Liam Watson says that the experienced centre-back can still play a significant role in helping the beleaguered Bucks climb the table in the coming weeks.

Akrigg was initially expected to be out for around six weeks after injuring his hamstring at Kidderminster Harriers two weeks ago.

But Watson, whose team were today due play second-placed Woking away, now fears it is more likely to be about eight overall.

He said: "Steve is looking like he will be out for at least another six weeks. It is a little bit longer than we expected. It looks like there is a tear in his hamstring."

The 27-year-old will continue his rehabilitation work on the injury with the Bucks' physio to aid his recovery.

But he will also continue to be around the squad for games and was set to make the long journey south with the team to Woking's Kingfield Stadium for today's game.

Akrigg's experience and leadership remains invaluable to a youthful squad, Watson believes.

The Bucks boss said: "He will be coming to the games. It is important to keep him in the camp during this time.

"He is probably one of the most experienced players in the squad, so from that point of view we need him to be there. He'll help the younger ones anyway."

Akrigg had played all of the Bucks' 14 league games before limping out of the 1-1 draw at Aggborough.

Luton Town centre-half Andy Parry was brought in as cover for an initial month's loan last week. That deal is set to expire before Akrigg's expected return to action.
