AFC Telford boss looking for home comforts

AFC Telford United manager Liam Watson reckons his team must start taking their decent defensive away record back to the New Bucks Head.

Watson's newly-promoted side had shipped 10 goals in five Vanarama Conference matches so far this season, prior to today's trip to Dartford.

But only two of those have come away from home, a superb curling Harry Beautyman effort in a 1-1 draw at Welling and a 25-yard Ollie Clarke screamer in a 1-0 loss at Bristol Rovers.

And Watson has warned that his team must learn to become more miserly in front of their own fans after shipping three, two and three in home games against Macclesfield, Aldershot and Southport.

He said: "We have only conceded two goals away from home so we look a lot more solid away than we do at home.

"If you think of the two goals we have conceded away from home one is a 'worldie' into the top corner from a short corner at Welling.

"And the other is a wordlie at Bristol Rovers. Both goals have come from outside the box, so away from home we look a lot more solid.

"I think it is the fact that we are (really) trying to go and win games at home which has left us vulnerable so that is just something we need to adapt to.

"But I am confident that we have got the squad to do that."

The Bucks will have to heed that warning relatively quickly with home games against Dover, Barnet, Torquay and Chester to come in the next month, along with away games at Gateshead, Alfreton and Halifax.

Meanwhile Watson said that winger Josh Hancock's month-long loan move back to Witton Albion will be an ideal confidence booster following a disrupted start to his Bucks career.

Hancock joined the Bucks in the close season but has yet to feature for his new club so far this campaign.

And Watson said: "To be honest he suffered with blisters in pre-season, and he didn't get an awful lot of game time.

"And probably with us playing with a back three and because Sean Cooke has done so well, what we need to do is get him some game time and get his confidence up a bit."
