Steve Akrigg wants Shots fired at AFC Telford
AFC Telford United captain Steve Akrigg can't recall ever playing a Conference Premier game on a Sunday before - but he does remember beating Aldershot.
The Bucks are still looking for their first win of the season in non-league's top flight, a 1-1 draw at Welling United preceding a 3-2 loss at home to Macclesfield.
Liam Watson's side are back at the New Bucks Head tomorrow and summer signing Akrigg knows what it takes to beat the Shots, after tasting victory with former club Southport.
He said: "It's probably the first time I have played on a Sunday, certainly since I was very young, although I have played on Thursday and Friday nights in the Conference with Southport.
"This is a big game and Aldershot are a decent side, they did lose at Eastleigh the other night but it was in the very last minute, I didn't watch it, because we were training.
"I played against them last season and they weren't bad at all, we beat them 1-0 at home but lost 5-1 at their place. I would love the first result again tomorrow, but not the away one!
"They would have been a lot higher in the table had it not been for that points deduction, so I didn't really pay too much attention to that. I know they are a decent outfit.
"We have been unlucky not to keep a clean sheet so far. At Welling, we were down to nine men and switched off for moment and that was the goal.
"We just didn't have enough players in the right positions, which is understandable. At times in the second-half, it was almost like a training game of defence against attack.
"Our defending wasn't great against Macclesfield, we got off to a terrible start and went in at half-time 3-1 down. It could have been worse, to be honest.
"We applied ourselves a lot better in the second-half, we could have won the game with the amount of chances that we had. That's what we need to remember going into tomorrow.
"We could have won both games, but that's the Conference Premier. There's that fine line between success and failure."
Akrigg is hoping to lead the charge from the front and wants a clean sheet as the platform for success, something they have yet to record since starting the campaign.
He said: "A clean sheet is our main target, we take a lot of the pressure off ourselves if we can make that happen. I am confident we can nick a goal at the other end.
"We have threats all around the team, it's not just one person. We have scored goals in both games, so that's something I am not worried about.
"It's important we turn our home ground into a fortress. I know how hard it is going away, so it's very important. That's where we should be picking up a lot of our points."
Akrigg took the armband vacated by Simon Grand after coming on board in the close season, as a relatively old head at the age of 27.
He said: "It's great to be captain and it's important to lead by example. The gaffer was waiting to see how I came back from injury before he made the decision, which I was fine with.
"I couldn't ask for any more, in that sense, it's a great club and the fans are fantastic. To be skipper gives me that little bit more self belief."
Boss Watson, Akrigg and a number of first-team players will be reunited with Southport when this month's Bank Holiday Monday home clash rolls around, after next Saturday's trip to Bristol Rovers.
Akrigg said: "I know from my time at Southport that there's a fine line between success and failure. There's a fair few of us that have been there and will be looking forward to the game.
"Bristol Rovers had 7,000 there for their first home game, so it could be intimidating. It's down to us to play without fear. Taking on Southport could be a bit of a grudge match."
