AFC Telford players told to start new away run
AFC Telford United boss Liam Watson today challenged his attacking players to be the goal-getters away from home that they were last season.
The Bucks only failed to score on the road in one league game, a 2-0 loss at Oxford City, during their Conference North title-winning campaign.
Watson's men now kick off at Welling United tomorrow in the Conference Premier, with the Telford chief still in the belief attack is the best form of defence on their travels.
Park View Road is a new one for the manager to tick off on his list of non-league outposts and he will be sending his side out with a 'no fear' approach.
He said: "I have never been to Welling, strangely enough because I have been to most places. It's not meant to be the best but that won't really bother us, because we are used to things like that.
"I had them watched last weekend when they played a Brentford side at home and the reports were quite positive, so it's going to be tough there.
"We went to some horrible places last season. I hadn't been to Brackley Town or Oxford City either last season and Oxford was the place you wouldn't want to go back to, they made life very tough.
"That was the only place we didn't score at last season, that's the way we are going to set up again this season. We won't be going anywhere to nick a goalless draw.
"I thought we played well when we went to Brackley on Bonfire Night, we should have won there. They got a deflected equaliser.
"I prefer to go and be positive away from home. When you set up to be negative, there's every chance you will end up losing anyway."
Telford negotiate Welling before they stage two home games next week, Macclesfield Town opening the home schedule on Tuesday night before Aldershot are the visitors a week on Sunday.
Watson said: "Just getting off to a good start is the main thing. I am sure if we can get points on the board tomorrow, it would give us confidence going back to the New Bucks Head on Tuesday night.
"I don't really mind going away on the first day, sometimes it can be easier while every team is not overly settled."
