Fitness first as Bucks check in

AFC Telford United manager Liam Watson today told his players the hard work starts here as they returned for pre-season training.

The Telford squad reported to Wrekin College this morning for their first session, working up to their opening pre-season friendly in two weeks time.

Championship outfit Blackburn Rovers will visit the New Bucks Head on Saturday, July 12, in a tough opener to their summer schedule.

The Skrill Conference North champions are stepping up to the Conference Premier and Watson wants them tested from the off.

He said: "There won't be a lot of ball work over the first six sessions, it's about making sure they are as fit as possible. We will need to be. Blackburn are supposed to be bringing their first-team down here.

"Most of the pre-season games we have lined up will be tough, that's what we are going to face each and every week in the Conference Premier."

The playing surface at The New Bucks Head will be given time to flourish before the big kick-off, so the Bucks will call the college home in their preparation for games.

Watson said:"It's a good facility for us to use."

Telford have also decided to scrap their under-18 side, which operated in the midweek Midland Floodlit Youth League last season.

It may pave the way for a fully funded scholarship-apprentice scheme, which the club are looking into implementing from 2015.

But they will field an under-16 girls team for the first time in the Shropshire Women's League. Home games will be at Tibberton FC.
