AFC Telford in for Hereford's Rod McDonald
AFC Telford United today landed defender Rod McDonald Jnr from Hereford United - with midfielder Mike Grogan also agreeing a new contract.
Grogan, who scored 15 goals in the Skrill Conference North title-winning campaign last season, has landed a one-year deal to replace non-contract terms.
McDonald is likely to join him at the New Bucks Head as the exodus begins from Edgar Street, who were booted out of the Conference pyramid yesterday.
Winger Kingsley James has already joined reprieved Chester, with McDonald now looking to follow suit and arrive in Shropshire on a one-year contract.
The 22-year-old has been a long-standing target for Watson and was desperate to leave Hereford, amid claims the playing squad haven't been paid in months.
The Crewe-based stopper will drop into the part-game with Telford and look into studying at university, while remaining a Conference Premier footballer.
He's the son of former Walsall favourite Rod and brother of ex-Saddlers defender Clayton, with Watson playing alongside his Dad at Runcorn back in 2000.
The Bucks boss said: "He's been sorted for a bit but there's been problems as he's under 24, so there has been a situation regarding compensation with Hereford.
"I tried to sign him last season, too, when I first came to Telford but he had the offer to play in the Conference Premier. I think he's a good signing for us.
"Rod can play at centre-half or left-back and is only a young lad, so has potential. He's good mates with our winger Josh Hancock, too, which will help him settle in.
"We needed a bit more balance on the left hand side, with Simon Grand going, and I also like to play with three at the back, a formation he would fit well into.
"We didn't have a natural left-sider. I may not necessarily sign an out-and-out left-back now. We have Rod, Chris Lever and Andy Owens who can all play there."
Watson took to Twitter to express his sorrow for Hereford fans, with Telford now pitting their wits against Steve Burr's Chester.
He tweeted: "Pleased for @ChesterFC and @stevieburr10 that they are back up. Feel sorry for Hereford fans."
