Mike Grogan has golden goal as AFC Telford prepare for Histon

AFC Telford United's new joint top-scorer, Mike Grogan, has a striker's knack for scoring goals – and it could take him all the way to the club's first 'golden head' award.

The Bucks' defensive midfielder is neck-and-neck with striker Adam Farrell with 12, after netting his fourth double of the campaign at home last weekend.

A bullet header broke the deadlock for the Skrill Conference North title-chasers against Histon, before he popped up again to plunder the third in a 3-2 victory.

That made it five strikes where the 25-year-old has used his loaf and he admits his bonce striking the ball is a powerful attribute – he considers himself a defender.

But the other seven goals a striker would have been proud of, particularly a rasping volley in the second of his two goals at Hednesford Town – the first was a header.

He said: "It's just down to being in the right place at the right time, I don't think I have any sort of special secret. It could be a striker's instinct, if you want to call it that.

"I have got a little knack for it and I know I can head a ball because I played at centre-half. That's my position, but the gaffer here likes to play me in midfield.

"It's probably the strongest part of my game, I would head it off the floor if I could! I didn't think I would get that many, with the position I am in, but I will take it."

Grogan didn't make his debut until the seventh game of the season, either, after arriving from a Cammell Laird side that just missed out on promotion last season. They lost on penalties in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Division One North play-off final against Trafford, after a campaign where Grogan netted 10 goals from centre-half.

He's now got the chance of becoming a Conference Premier player with Telford, which would be three levels up from where he started the fixture list, but he's staying grounded.

He said: "I haven't won a thing yet! The nearest I got was last season when I was at Cammell Laird and that was disappointing. This would make that feel a whole lot better. All we can do is keep on winning and hope the league leaders, North Ferriby, slip up. Every game is massive game for us between now and the end of the season.

"We have been saying for weeks that we want to put in a better performance but I think that, with the way we play, it's not very nice to watch, at certain times.

"But we are winning games and getting results but, at some time, we are going to come out and batter someone. We certainly have got the right players for it.

"We want it to be enjoyable, of course, but we have got to win every game now and it can be a bit tense. We keep doing our job and that is most important."

Telford fans will expect better at the New Bucks Head tomorrow in their first-ever game against Oxford City who, like Histon, are battling against relegation.

The Bucks laboured to three points against the Stutes last weekend and even Grogan felt he let the side down, despite netting the goals that got them the points.

He said: "Histon played well and made it hard for us, but we got the goals we needed through set pieces and we have that in our locker, that's why we are up there."
